“Excuse me, miss?”
She stopped and brought back her shoulders before turning “Yes?”
In the shimmer of early morning sunlight, he winced at the nasty bruise blossoming beneath one eye.
“Does that hurt as bad as it looks?”
“What do you want?”
The second gift from God came in the form of a voice designed to make a man think of steamy nights and wrinkled sheets. He extended a hand before launching into the usual PIO song and dance, complete with practiced looks of earnest sincerity.
“Kieran Pollack, Public Information Officer for the Victory PD. What's a pretty thing like you doing in a joint like this?”
Panel vans bearing the logos of local TV affiliates screeched to a halt at the curb outside the Public Safety Building before disgorging reporters and camera-persons.
Urgency born of necessity upped the charm factor with a fast two-step, and a faster line of bull. “Look, can you help out a hard working public servant?”
“Not without my attorney.”
“Aw, we don't need no crummy lawyers to make things right, do we?”
“I believe it's in the Bill of Rights,” she murmured and took one step to the left, deftly avoiding his out-stretched hand.
“Please. Hear me out,” he pressed, one eye on camera-persons now jockeying for positions inside the revolving doors of the atrium. “It would be to your advantage if we went someplace to talk this out. I might be able to make everything go away if you'd--”
A spark flared in those sunken eyes. “I'd sooner walk barefoot through a nest of pit vipers.”
